GRP Framework Supply for Wales & West Utilities

Project Overview

Quinshield has supplied Wales & West Utilities with GRP products for over ten years, supporting projects across all four Wales & West Utilities regions.

After being awarded a GRP kiosk framework contract in 2008, Quinshield went on to become a preferred supplier by exceeding expected service levels across a wide range of site-specific projects.

The Requirement

Wales &West Utilities require a dependable GRP supplier capable of supporting gas infrastructure projects across multiple regions.

For example, each site had different requirements depending on the equipment being housed, access restrictions, site layout and specification requirements.

Quinshield needed to provide flexible GRP solutions while supporting site surveys, drawing approvals, delivery and installation where required.

The Solution

Quinshield supplied a wide range of GRP products to Wales & West Utilities, including governor and regulator buildings, telemetry and E&I buildings, boiler houses, roofs, covers, door leaves, complete doors and frames, and GRP panel cladding systems.

The service ranged from supply only through to supply, delivery and installation. Where required, Quinshield visited site to assess access, take detailed measurements, photograph the works area and agree installation requirements with Wales & West Utilities and civil contractors.

For governor and regulator buildings, drawings were issued for approval before manufacture. This helped confirm the building layout and ensured site-specific requirements, including zoning considerations, were checked before production.

Site-Specific Delivery and Installation

Many Wales & West Utilities projects required more than standard product supply. Site surveys were used to confirm access, lifting requirements, measurements and integration with existing site conditions.

As a result, Quinshield plan the design, manufacture, delivery and installation process around each site. In addition, this approach was particularly important for projects involving restricted access, crane lifts, hand-carry installation, special finishes or multiple panel and roof sections.

By adapting the delivery method to each location, Quinshield supported smoother installation and reduced the risk of issues once the products arrived on site.

Example 1: Glan Conwy Governor House

At Glan Conwy, Quinshield supplied a GRP governor house that had to be manufactured in suitable sections so it could be manually carried down a bank and into position.

Because of the restricted access, Quinshield’s four-person team carried the sections into position and erected the housing on site. This project demonstrated the company’s ability to adapt the manufacture and installation approach around challenging site access.

Example 2: Burraton AGI Regulator Building

At Burraton AGI, Quinshield supplied a GRP regulator building manufactured in multiple panel and roof sections.

To support the installation, Quinshield installed the building on site using a 30-tonne crane, with Quinshield providing the site crew for installation. Wales & West Utilities disconnected and reconnected pipework where required, making coordination between teams an important part of the project.

Example 3: Coleford Governor Housing, Forest of Dean

At Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Quinshield supplied a GRP governor housing with a special wood-effect finish to match the original appearance of the previous structure.

The housing also had to be manually carried into position within a wooded area. Quinshield supplied a two-person team, working alongside a Wales & West Utilities team, to lift and position the panels on site.

As a result, the project highlighted Quinshield’s ability to combine site-sensitive finishes with practical installation planning.

Example 4: Nant Garw 2 Regulator Buildings

For Nant Garw 2, Quinshield supplied two GRP regulator buildings manufactured in multiple panel and roof sections.

The buildings were installed using a 50-tonne crane, with Quinshield providing the site crew. To complete both buildings efficiently, Quinshield carried out the installation over consecutive days.

This project demonstrated Quinshield’s ability to manage larger multi-building installations with careful planning and site coordination.

Outcome

Quinshield’s long-term relationship with Wales & West Utilities shows its ability to support gas infrastructure projects with reliable GRP manufacture, technical support and flexible delivery options.

Across the framework, Quinshield delivered standard GRP components, bespoke governor housings, special finishes and site-installed regulator buildings.

As a result, each project received a solution tailored to its site conditions, specification and installation requirements.
